Africa Trip

I was on a plane to Africa when a man that had skin just like an elephant sat down beside me. His eyes were as wide as a coach and stared at me coldly with blue empty eyes. He was an alien. I knew he smoked because, he smelt just like a chimney. The plane was heated a little to well so when the flight attendant offered us drinks we both said yes. I was relieved when we got the drinks except his drinking sounded like a car engine revving. Luckily the flight was only two hours, so we never got provided a meal. When we were getting ready to get off the plane he stood up first being as tall as the Eiffel tower. After getting off the plane I rushed to go pick up my luggage where I met the man I was sitting beside yet again. The luggage he obtained was as wide as a river. The fun of my trip now begins because I have arrived in Africa for my two-month vacation.

College app

Desirae Martin is what they call me. I am a big deal. I can race around the world in a day. I can do homework in less than a minute. I can sleep for 4 hours with it being only 4 minutes. Climbing Mount Everest was a breeze to me. People call me crazy but really I’m extraordinary. I am better than the Dog Whisperer; for I am the horse whisperer. I can teach horses to bark, cook and even fetch. I can train a stallion to be tranquil in only 20 minutes.  Wednesdays after school, I swim, bike and run the Ironman course in less than an hour. I am super women. Thursdays I eat reindeer. Fridays I ride to school on a porcupine.  Ellen gets all her ideas from me and doctors come to me for advice since I’m the smartest doctor in the world. I am an environmentalist; I recycle everything and only use organic cleaners. I ride kangaroos in the arctic and swim with polar bears in Mexico. I have spoken with Ghandi and survived the gas chambers during the holocaust. This all may seem crazy, but only I Desirae Martin have done such miraculous things.

Concrete Angel by Martina McBride

She walks to school with a lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back;
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday,
She hides the bruises with the linen and lace;
oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask,
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask;
Bearing the burdon of a secret storm,
Sometimes she wishes she was never born;

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night,
The neighbors hear but they turn out the lights;
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate,
When morning comes it will be too late.

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

A statue stands in a shaded place,
An angel girl with an upturned face;
Her name is written on a polished rock,
A broken heart that the world forgot.

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

Have you ever listened to a song and recognized that it contains similes and allusions to the bible? Songs often use several poetic devices throughout the lyrics to express the meaning of the song more effectively. Concrete angel by Martina McBride is a song that contains several poetic devices. Concrete angel is about a girl who gets abused by her parents; the teachers and neighbors recognize there is something wrong with her life at home but they decide to just leave it and the girl dies because she was neglected. The title "Concrete Angel" is a poetic device itself; the title is an oxymoron since angels are meant to be free spirited loving creatures and concrete is hard and dull. One of the themes portrayed by Concrete Angel is that anyone can stop their life to get an innocent child help instead of letting them suffer and die. The girl goes to school "[hiding] the bruises with linen and lace," this contrasts one another when you wear linen and lace it is a symbol of innocence and perfection but for this young girl it is just covering up the abuse and neglect caused by her parents." Her name written on a polished rock" is imagery. It provides us a picture of a tombstone in a graveyard with the girl’s name on it, providing us that she has died. The song does a very good job emphasizing words and phrases like" a statue stands in a shaded place" being a good example of alliteration and emphasizing how this girl is getting ignored and resembling a statue like figure." "She stands hard as a stone" is a simile for the girl trying to be strong and ignore the abuse, neglect and the pain she receives from her parents.

What a twist!

Gary Sinise, did a very good job at directing the movie of the American novel Of Mice and Men.  George and Lennie, two friends who were travelling together for work during the depression were expressed identically from the novel to the movie.  George’s character was exactly how I pictured him to be: caring, cautious and protective. George cares about his friend, Lennie so much that before Aunt Clara died he promised her he would take care of her nephew Lennie.  George is cautious and protective of Lennie in both the film and the novel when they talk with the boss to see if they received the job.  The ending of the film was different than the novel. In the novel they use action and description to impress the reader whereas in the film it uses suspense for the ending to be more dramatic for the viewers.

Fantasy World

  Jane asked “Are you ever going to take your eyes off the paper?”
          “Of course,” said Bob, “when I’m done with it.”
“Well how bout you get done with it now, you never acknowledge me anymore.”
         “Dear, I do acknowledge you but your just not interesting, he sighed, and you don’t ever care to listen to me when I’m talking to you, so why should I?”
“I’m sorry that I’m not interested in your fantasy crap!” Jane screamed as she walked away.
        Bob replied, “Well I’m sorry that we ever got married.”
“Don’t you say that you wish we never got married,” Jane exclaimed, “because I’m the one who got you in the media.” “I’m the one who got you famous.”
           “I’m sorry Jane; I should have never said that, you’re right I would have been nothing if I had never met you. How about we start over?” Said Bob
“Ok, replied Jane, how was your day today?”
          “Very depressing, all I did was mess up my lines; I could not get them right.” Bob explained.
“That’s not good, how about you practice your lines with me?” Jane asked
          “What a great idea.” So off Bob went to get his lines and rehearse them with his wife, Jane.

The next day, Jane asked “Bob how did your acting go today? Did you remember all your lines?”
         “Yes, honey I never forgot one line. Thanks for all your help, I couldn’t have done it without you, you’re a lifesaver.” After that day Bob and Jane never fought again, for they discussed their problems before they got out of control.

If I could speak every language.

Have you ever been somewhere and been misunderstood because of the language you speak;  or have you not understood someone because of the language they speak? Well now that will all change, by speaking 3 or more languages you will be able to communicate with almost everyone around the globe. Now that is life changing. While only 10 percent of the world's population understands English only 5.6 percent speaks English. Speaking more than one-language lets you communicate and interact with more than one race and culture. Well now that will all change, by speaking 3 or more languages you will be able to communicate with almost everyone around the globe. Now that is life changing. If you ever felt you wanted to travel to Europe or even Jamaica you could just hop on a plane and go there without having the obligation to learn there native language. By knowing several languages work would be accessible all around the globe by being a translator or even being able to work in a hospital across seas because you are conversant in their language. Jobs these days are also in demand of bilingual people, so that there product and job is directed and understood by all languages and cultures. . Our era is becoming more and more multi-cultural  having the ability to communicate with everyone is extremely valuable. If I could learn every language I would, so I can talk and help people who do not understand or speak English.

The Unexpected Twist

      It was a dark and stormy night. George was sweating bullets for Curley was bent out of shape about Lennie killing his wife. Outside of the bunkhouse Curley was chomping at the bit to get this fight started. “Lennie destroyed my wife, he’s going to get it” Curley said. “I beg to differ Lennie never wanted to kill her.” George was quick as a bunny and dodged Curley’s swing to the chest. George had something up his sleeve. George pinned Curley down and went for the gogoplata. George fought to the bitter end. Curley caused an unexpected twist, he flipped George onto his back, George was very concerned for that Curley was not going to lighten up. This was George’s worst nightmare. Winning was everything to Curley.
